Automatic cars and SUVs are currently gaining acceptance in India. Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCT) is a type of automatic transmission that uses two separate clutches instead of a conventional torque converter. These are known for being fast with their shifts and were previously offered on premium cars and SUVs only. Of late, even mass-market offerings come equipped with DCT boxes. Here are 17 examples...
Skoda Kushaq
Like its predecessor, the facelifted Skoda Kushaq launched in March this year, also offers a dual-clutch transmission, which Skoda-Volkswagen calls the DSG, on higher trims. Two engine options are offered on the new Kushaq- 1.0L TSI turbocharged petrol and a 1.5L TSI turbo-petrol. The latter is only available with the DSG gearbox. The Prestige and Monte Carlo trims offer the 1.5 TSI- seven-speed DSG combination.
Volkswagen Taigun
Volkswagen gave the Taigun a much-anticipated update in April this year. The refreshed Taigun features the 7-speed DSG only on the range-topping GT Line trims - GT Plus Chrome & GT Plus Sport. Like the Kushaq, the Volkswagen SUV also offers this automatic only with the bigger 1.5L TSI engine.
Skoda Slavia And Volkswagen Virtus
The Slavia and Virtus are also popular models in the sedan segment. They offer the 1.5 TSI- seven-speed DSG combination on higher variants- Sportline, Prestige and Monte Carlo trims of the Slavia and GT Plus DSG ES and GT Plus Sport of the Virtus. Both these sedans are now awaiting facelifts. These updates will likely bring notable improvements to them and make them even more competitive.
Hyundai Verna
The facelifted Hyundai Verna sedan comes with two engine options- 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5L turbocharged petrol, the latter of which is also offered with the choice of a seven-speed dry clutch DCT transmission. It is available on two high-end trims- HX8 Turbo DCT and HX10 Turbo DCT.
Second-Generation Hyundai Venue
Hyundai launched the second-generation Venue in November last year. It retains the powertrain options of the first generation model- which means the 1.0L turbo-petrol is offered with the choice of a 7-speed DCT transmission as well. The standard Venue offers this gearbox on four trims- HX5 Turbo DCT, HX6 Turbo DCT, HX8 Turbo DCT and HX10 Turbo DCT- whereas the sportier N-Line version offers it on the N6DCT and N10DCT trims.
Hyundai Creta
Yes, the Creta has started to show its age and is awaiting a full-generational update. It, however, continues to dominate the mid-size SUV segment. This SUV offers the 7-speed DCT along with the 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. It is available on the SX(O) Turbo trim of the regular SUV and the N8 DCT and N10 DCT trims of the N-Line.
Second-Generation Kia Seltos
Launched in January this year, the second-generation Kia Seltos offers the 7-speed DCT transmission along with the 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. The HTK (O) Turbo DCT, HTX Turbo DCT, HTX (ADAS) Turbo DCT, GTX Turbo DCT, X-Line Turbo DCT, X-Line (ADAS) Turbo DCT, and GTX (ADAS) Turbo DCT variants offer this combination.
Kia Sonet And Syros
The Sonet and Syros are both sub-four-metre SUVs from Kia. On both, the DCT transmission is offered with the 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine. On the Sonet, you get it on variants like the HTK (O) Turbo DCT, HTK Plus (O) Turbo DCT, HTX Turbo DCT, GTX Plus Turbo DCT and X-Line Turbo DCT. The HTK+ DCT, HTK+ (O) DCT, HTX DCT, and HTX (O) DCT variants of the Syros come with this gearbox.
Kia Carens Clavis
In the mass-market seven-seater space, Kia has two products on sale- the Carens and Carens Clavis. Just the Carens Clavis offers the seven-speed DCT along with the 1.5-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol engine. The HTK+ Turbo DCT, HTK+ (O) Turbo DCT, HTX(O) Turbo DCT, HTX+ Turbo DCT, GTX / GTX+ Turbo DCT, and X-Line Turbo DCT variants of the Clavis come with this combination.
Hyundai Alcazar
The turbo-petrol variants of the Alcazar, Hyundai’s three-row SUV, come equipped with the seven-speed DCT transmission. The Prestige, Platinum and Signature trims offer the choice of 1.5L turbo-petrol- DCT combination. These include both seven and six-seater variants as well.
Renault Duster
Launched in March this year, the Renault Duster offers the choice of a six-speed AISIN-sourced wet-clutch DCT automatic transmission along with its 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol (TCe 160) engine. The Evolution, Techno. Techno Plus and Iconic trims offer the turbo-engine-DCT combination.
Tata Altroz
The Altroz received a facelift in May 2025. The powertrain options, however, remained unchanged. The DCT (which Tata Motors calls DCA) is paired with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Naturally Aspirated petrol engine making around 88hp. The combination is offered on the XM+, XT, XZ, XZ+, and Dark Edition trims.
Tata Nexon
The Nexon, India’s highest selling Tata car, offers the DCA transmission option on variants powered by the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It is available on Creative, Creative Plus, Fearless, Fearless S, Fearless Plus, Fearless Plus S, and Dark / Red Dark Edition trims.
Tata Curvv
The Curvv coupe pairs the DCA transmission with all of its engines- 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol, 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Direct-Injection turbo-petrol and the 1.5 diesel. The transmission comes on variants like Creative, Creative S, Creative Plus, Accomplished, Accomplished S, Empowered, and Empowered Plus.
Tata Sierra
The recently-launched Tata Sierra also mates a dual-clutch transmission with its base-petrol engine- a newly-developed 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol Atkinson cycle. It is available on the Pure, Adventure, and Accomplished trims.
