Passenger car sales figures from May 2026 reveal an interesting development. Maruti Suzuki has not only retained its position as the highest-selling car brand in India, but also secured the top three spots in the month’s model-wise sales chart! The Dzire emerged as the highest-selling car in the country, followed by the Fronx and the Ertiga. Here’s a closer look…
May 2026: Maruti Suzuki’s Impressive Dominance

In May, the carmaker sold 1,90,337 units. In April this year, its sales stood at 1,87,704 units. That makes a month-on-month increase of 1.4%. Tata Motors took the second spot with 59,000 units sold in May. You can now see just how big the margin is.
Now, let’s look at the model-wise chart. The list of top-selling cars in May had not one, but six Maruti Suzuki models in it. More importantly, the top three spots were all taken by the Indo-Japanese juggernaut. The Dzire became India’s most sold car in May 2026, posting sales of 24,546 units. In April, it had sold 23,580 units, marking a 4.1% growth this time.

At the second place is the Fronx that sold 20686 units in May. 18829 units of it were sold in April. That shows a month-on-month increase of 9.9 percent. In third place, we have the Ertiga that posted sales of 20350 units last month- 1287 more than the April number (19,063 units), translating to approximately 6.8% growth.
The Baleno, WagonR and Swift took the sixth, seventh, and eighth places selling 18,396 units, 18076 units and 17,519 units respectively, during the month.
Closer Look At The Top 3 Best-Sellers

Maruti Suzuki launched the fourth-generation Dzire in November 2024. It came with a brand-new design, packed more equipment than before and was powered by an all-new 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine. Over the years, we saw it get popular in both private and commercial segments.
There is also a CNG version to it, which is in high demand as well. Maruti's multi-powertrain strategy has also helped in shaping its acceptance here. In fact, in the financial year 2026, it sold 2,29,130 units of this sedan in India.
The Dzire’s success also indicates that despite the growing obsession towards SUVs, there are takers for smartly-designed, value-packed sedans, in our market.

The Fronx is another Maruti Suzuki model that has consistently seen strong demand since its market debut. It is available with three engine options- 1.2-Litre K-Series Naturally Aspirated petrol, CNG and 1.0L turbocharged petrol. Both manual and automatic transmissions are also offered.

Good-looking design, well-equipped cabin and a strong (smart) set of powertrains attract people to this model. It is sold through the premium Nexa dealership network and is expected to get a facelift sometime this year. We also know that Maruti has plans to introduce a flex-fuel (E85-compatible) version of the Fronx in India in the near term.

The Ertiga has a strong foothold in both private and fleet segments, just like the Dzire. The model on sale now is the facelifted second generation Ertiga that launched in 2022. It comes with a 1.5-litre K15C DualJet petrol and CNG engines. The petrol version is available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
Value-centric packaging remains the biggest highlight of this MPV. It provides ample room for seven occupants with minimal compromises, has enough features to keep them comfortable, comes with a strong engine and at an affordable price- that makes it a no-brainer for many MPV buyers. The Ertiga is expected to get a full generational update in the coming years. This would make the package even more compelling.
